So, you’ve decided it’s time to make the switch to tampons. Whether you’re a first-timer or needing a lil refresher, we’ve got your back. Tampons may seem a little intimidating at first, but dw, we know the feeling and we’re here to guide you through everything you need to know before taking the plunge into tampon territory.
Tampon anatomy
Understanding all the parts of a tampon is deffo a big help for successful insertion. All tampons have a cylindrical body made of absorbent material and have a string attached to one end. Psst, our organic cotton tampons expand differently, they’re width-wise for increased comfort and superior leak protection.
FLO always does things differently (to boring conventional tampons) because our tampons are made from super organic, hypoallergenic and biodegradable cotton. And it gets better, our FLO Eco-Applicator Tampons have plant-based sugarcane applicators to make insertion a silky-smoooooth dream.
Choosing the right tampon for your flow 🩸
Tampons have different sizes and absorbencies to accommodate your flow levels. At FLO we have our regular and super sizes, made for lighter or heavier days. Picking the right size can help prevent leaks and ensure you’re comfortable down there. If you’re unsure, you could start with a lower absorbency and adjust as needed, and if you’re worried about bleeding through your favourite pants, you could also wear a FLO Bamboo Panty Liner.
Inserting a tampon
Here comes the scary part - not! Though inserting your first tampon feels a little daunting, we promise there’s nothing to be afraid of. Practice makes perfect and it’ll soon become second nature. Here’s a step-by-step guide, applicator-edition:
Find a comfy position: A lot of us find sitting on the toilet with knees apart or standing with one leg elevated to be the most comfortable position for insertion.
Hold the tampon: Hold the tampon applicator between your thumb and middle finger, with your index finger resting on the applicator plunger.
Insert the tampon: Gently insert the rounded end of the applicator into the vaginal opening until your fingers touch your body.
Push the plunger: Use your index finger to push the plunger, releasing the tampon into the vagina.
Remove the applicator: Hold onto the string and gently pull out the applicator. You’ll know you’re good to go if the tampon doesn’t come back out with the applicator!
Reposition if needed: If you can feel the tampon or something doesn’t feel right, you can use your finger to push the tampon a little higher up. Remember, the string needs to still be accessible to pull out the tampon later so don’t push up too high and lose it, (we’ve made that mistake before).
When to change your tampon
It’s essential to change your tampon regularly to prevent leaks and maintain a healthy vagina. As a general rule, tampons should be changed every four to eight hours, depending on your flow, usually, you’ll know when it's time for a changeover! Remember, never leave a tampon in for longer than eight hours.
Removing your tampon
Taking out a tampon is easy-peasy. All you need to do is find the string and gently pull it downwards. (But plz be careful it doesn’t swing and mess up your bathroom sink)!!! Then just pop your used tampon in a bin and you’re good to go. As a rule of thumb, avoid flushing tampons down the toilet because they can cause blockages.
Extra top-tips
If you’re still having trouble with tampons, don’t panic it’s totally fine! Here are a few extra tried and tested tips:
Find your zen: Take a deep breath and try to relax. Tension can make insertion more challenging.
Treat it like a selfie and try a different angle: Experiment with different angles and positions to find what works best for you.
Use lubrication: If insertion feels dry or uncomfortable, try using a water-based lube to ease the process.
Tampons can be the MVP of period care. 💪 Here are a few occasions when you might opt for a tampon instead of a pad:
Always discreetFancy wearing that playsuit or your shapewear during your Flo? Tampons are super discreet and won’t show any visible lines.
On-the-go babe
If you’re constantly moving, whether it's hitting the gym, going for a swim, or just having a busy day, tampons can offer you the freedom to stay active with no worries. Unlike pads, these babies stay securely in place, making them perfect for any high-energy activity.
Day trippin’
Got a long day ahead with no time for frequent loo breaks? Tampons, especially those with higher absorbency, can provide reliable protection for hours, allowing you to go about your day without having to change your pad.
Catching flights not feelz
Travelling can be unpredictable, and tampons are a compact, mess-free option to stash in your bag. They take up less space than pads and can be easily carried without the bulk, making them a travel-friendly period solution.
Making the switch to tampons can feel like a big step up from pads but with the right info and prep, it’s a breeeze. Remember, everyone’s experience with tampons is different, so don’t be too hard on yourself if it takes a little time to find your groove.
And always listen to your body, if something doesn’t feel right, don’t hesitate to reach out to your local GP for more guidance.
