How we give back at Here We Flo

How we give back at Here We Flo-Here We Flo

Whether you’ve spent a hot minute on our website, or you’re a true FLO Babe, you’ll probably know that we’re a women-led team & a women-of-colour-owned business. You’ll also be happy to know that giving back is one of the core values of Here We Flo!

Our big ‘why’ for giving back

Even before Here We Flo, our co-founders and besties Susan and Tara shared a simple yet powerful belief: that each individual and business has the power to create a positive impact in the world, no matter how small.

All of us at Here We Flo believe in the power of community and want to be a force of change. That’s why our products, our packaging and our marketing are feminist, fierce and funny - to bash the shame and embarrassment surrounding the products we make and to become a safe space for empowering conversations that benefit our wider community.

But we’re not just talking the talk! We also donate 5% of our profits to charitable organisations close to our hearts and make product donations of sustainable period care, natural sensitive bladder protection and eco-friendly condoms to various charities and community-led initiatives.

Who do 5% of Here We Flo profits go to?

We’re proud to support the work of two amazing charities through profit donation: Orchid Project and Bloody Good Period.

A little bit about Orchid Project & FGC

Orchid Project estimate that over 200 million girls are impacted by FGC (Female Genital Cutting, also known as Female Genital Mutilation). Many die from this practice or suffer from lifelong negative effects like shock, fear, pain and trauma. Barriers like deeply rooted traditions, misconceptions, as well as rigid social norms are all challenges to ending FGC. Orchid Project advocates for change in global policies and works with survivors to offer them the support they need.

Why we 💖 them

Tackling tough conversations in an open and constructive way is how we believe we can help drive change forward and how we can destigmatize topics that are considered taboo. Similarly, the practice of FGC has a lot to do with social norms that have pushed the practice to become an unquestioned taboo. Part of Orchid Project’s work, which we think is incredibly powerful, involves holding space for conversations about FGC to happen in the communities the practice still exists in and enabling change to emerge from within.

What's bloody good about Bloody Good Period

Many people live in poverty and cannot afford period products, thus resorting to using toilet paper, old scraps of fabric or nothing at all. As you can imagine, this can have an incredibly debilitating impact on a menstruating person’s ability to work, go to school, or participate in their day to day life.

Bloody Good Period, founded by Gabby Edlin, provides much needed menstrual care products to asylum and refugee centres, as well as food banks, homeless shelters and communities that need them. They are fighting for a world where the simple fact of menstruating doesn’t stop anyone from fully participating in society or life.

Why we 💖 them

Like Bloody Good Period’s, our ideal world is one where healthy, sustainable periods are a reality for everyone, not just a lucky few. Simply put, we believe that having access to menstrual products is a basic human right, not a privilege. Which is why we donate profits and products to them as often as we can, and why we also partnered up with The Female Glaze to donate quarterly proceedings from the Gabby Edlin FLO-nuts to Bloody Good Period.

Other forms of donation

We make monthly product donations to various non-profit organisations and schools that reach out for support in their period equity initiatives. We're very proud that we've been able to donate products to places like: St Mungo's, The Impact of Akt, The Oxfordshire Period Drive, The Moon Time Project, Food Not Bombs Dundee, The Sexuality Education School and many others. Despite still being a small business, we're doing our best to accommodate any UK charities by supplying sustainable period care products to those who need them.

Join our newsletter and make an impact!

Every month, we also draw a winner from our newsletter list of subscribers. The newsletter winner gets £100 worth of our eco-friendly products AND we also donate £50 on their behalf to a charity of their choice. So far we’ve donated to British Lung Foundation, Derian House Children's Hospice and Wythall Animal Sanctuary.

We really believe in the power of community and in taking small steps that can lead to wider social change. And we want to be surrounded by people who are just as interested and passionate in doing good as we are - so join the league if that sounds like you!
